UK Foreign Office issues urgent travel warning for anyone going to Greece

The Foreign Office has issued an urgent warning for travellers to Greece, cautioning about potential violent demonstrations, particularly in Athens, with a likelihood of police using tear gas.

The advisory is in response to planned protests, notably on November 17, a date marked by major yearly demonstrations to commemorate the 1973 Athens Polytechnic University student uprising against the ruling military junta.

In their update, the Foreign Office stated: "There are planned demonstrations on 17 November in Athens and major university cities, including Thessaloniki and Heraklion. These demonstrations could become violent, and security forces may deploy tear gas. If you are in areas where demonstrations are taking place, remain vigilant, move away quickly from the area, stay aware of your surroundings, and follow the advice of local authorities."

They also highlighted heightened security measures in Greece, including tourist sites, due to events in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. The advice to stay vigilant, avoid demonstrations, and follow local authorities' guidance was emphasized.

Stay aware of your surroundings, stay away from demonstrations and follow the advice of local authorities. Follow “112 Greece” on X (formerly known as Twitter) for official updates.”

The US Embassy issued a similar warning to American citizens, highlighting the potential for violence and property destruction during demonstrations, with a possibility of tear gas and anti-riot engagements between police and protestors.

Moreover, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office noted that the situation in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories elevates the risk for UK nationals, emphasizing a high global threat of terrorist attacks targeting British interests and nationals. Travellers are advised to remain vigilant at all times.
