Flower Tribute and March Commemorate Polytechnic Uprising in Athens

Hundreds of citizens of all ages, including small children, have gathered since early Friday outside the Athens Polytechnic to leave flowers in memory of the people who resisted and fought for democracy.

Later in the day, a march to the American embassy will follow, marking the 50th anniversary of the 1973 Polytechnic uprising against the military junta that ruled Greece on November 17.

Strong police forces have been deployed throughout Athens, and temporary traffic measures and changes in public transport routes are in effect.
