Seven out of 10 Greeks aged 18-34 live with their parents

It seems that the "dream" of many young Greeks aged 18-34 to leave their parental home and be able to build their own home remains unfulfilled.

The average age at which someone in Greece manages to leave their children's room is estimated at 30.7 years, while the European figure is 26.5 years.

7 out of 10 Greeks aged 18-34, mostly men, according to a recent Eurostat survey, live with their parents when the corresponding average in the list of 26 EU countries does not exceed 49.4%.

The difficult equation for young women and men who want to but can't spread their wings includes high rents and fixed costs, expensive goods and low wages.

The rental cost in half of the houses in Attica (48.2%) exceeds 500 euros per month, while even for small apartments up to 50 square meters the prices start from 400 euros.

Living together with their partner or with friends is a solution for many young people.

Hatzidakis presents 352-million-euro support package for 2.3 million citizens

Τhe Greek government on Thursday unveiled a 352-million-euro support package to help 2.3 million citizens to cope with higher cost of living.

The package, announced early Thursday morning by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, was presented in detail later in the day by National Economy and Finance Minister Kostis Hatzidakis. The package, named "social solidarity subsidy", was confirmed after the release of state budget execution data for the January-October period which showed a large primary surplus.

The financial support will be paid at Christmas and concerns 800,000 families with children, 1.055 million pensioners, 210,000 citizens receiving the minimum guaranteed income support, and 225,000 citizens receiving a special needs subsidy.

The government also plans to pay a extra subsidy of up to 200 euros to pensioners, double the amount for market pass, a heating subsidy, the youth pass and an 8% increase in the minimum guaranteed income, in December. Combined, the two packages total 717 million euros in December.

National Economy and Finance Minister Kostis Hatzidakis said the over-performance of the economy and of the state budget faciliated the government's efforts to offer financial support to people in need.
