14 regional airports in Greece smash previous record highs

In the first ten months of 2023, Greece's 14 regional airports, which Fraport manages, served 32.3 million passengers, up 8.4% compared to 2022 and 12% up compared to 2019. The data was presented by George Vilos, Fraport Greece's Executive Director for Commercial & Business Development, at a press briefing held on Tuesday.

Air passenger traffic at these regional airports is estimated to reach 33.8 million passengers by year's end, compared to 31.2 million in 2022, it was noted. The top ten overseas markets were the United Kingdom, Germany, Scandinavia, Italy, Poland, the Netherlands, France, Austria, Israel and the Czech Republic.

This upward trend in passenger traffic reflects the competitiveness of the Greek tourism product, which includes upgrading tourism-related infrastructures, noted Vilos.

Fraport Greece has invested over 1.8 billion euros to create modern and secure gateways to the country, noted Vilos. In comparison, 50 million euros is invested annually to modernise airports further.

Tourism Revenues in Greece Soar to Record Levels

According to data from the Bank of Greece, tourism revenues in Greece are on track to reach a record high this year. The data shows that from January to September, the country earned 17.91 billion euros from its main industry.

This is not only a significant increase from last year’s earnings of 15.5 billion euros, but also surpasses the revenues of the record-breaking year 2019, which amounted to 16.1 billion euros in the same period.

This indicates a year-on-year increase of 11.3%. September played a crucial role in driving these results, with earnings of 3.2 billion euros, representing a 12.8% increase compared to September 2019.
