The Monument to the Immortals of the Nation was inaugurated on Wednesday at the PAPAGOS Camp, in which the names of the 121,692 martyrs in battles involving Greece are engraved.
The Deputy Minister of National Defence attended the ceremony, Ioannis A. Kefalogiannis, and the Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff (GEETHA), General Konstantinos Floros, who spoke of a historic and symbolic day in his greeting.
"It is a sacred moment and, at the same time, deeply moving because this Monument is the smallest expression of our gratitude to the generations of Heroes of the Fatherland who watered the tree of Freedom, the Freedom of all of us," said the GEETHA chief.
He also emphasised that "the Motherland is grateful for their sacrifice" and noted that "from today, we will host them at the headquarters of the Ministry of National Defence, and we will pay them the due tribute every day, on every holiday, on every anniversary, in every event."
