A young man appeared at the Limassol Court with a suitcase containing 15,500 coins in denominations of one, two, five and ten cents. With this money, he wanted to pay a fine of €500 for driving without a license and insurance.

The Cypriot newspaper Phileleftheros published the news on Wednesday with a photo of the suitcase.

The Court Clerk's Office refused to accept the payment, telling the young man that he would have to go to a bank and convert the coins into paper money to be able to pay for the currency.

He could also deposit the money into his bank account and issue a check or pay by credit or debit card.

The young man told the newspaper that it is unacceptable that they do not accept the payment of the fine in coins, which are legal tender.
