Kyriakos Mitsotakis, New Democracy dominant in opinion polls - The PM unfolds his strategy

Yesterday's Metron Analysis survey on Mega found expected results for a party in its fifth month in government after a triumphant election victory. But New Democracy is serving its second government term. Still, it remains the regulator of political developments, with Kyriakos Mitsotakis dominating all political indicators by a long shot. At the same time, the opposition appears fragmented, and the battle for second place is on in the region of 15%.

It is no coincidence that the managing director of Metron Analysis, Stratos Fanaras, characterised the New Democracy (ND) as the "overdominant" party due to SYRIZA's free fall. It is not a coincidence that most pollsters in the background report that SYRIZA is currently measured at marginally double-digit values, with the KKE rising rapidly.

Indicatively, while ND exceeds 38%, PASOK seems to be consolidating in second place with a percentage of over 15% and gains of almost two points in the last month, as SYRIZA continues its downward course: From 15.2% to vote estimate in October, measured in late November by Metron Analysis at 12.7%.

The company also records a new rise of the KKE, which gained 1.3 points within a month, "closing" its difference from the main opposition party to 1.2 points (out of 5).

Sunak's points and the economy

However, it is not only the party indicators but also the personal indicators of Mr Mitsotakis, who gathers 41% in the suitability for prime ministership, followed by Nobody with 31%, Stefanos Kasselakis following far behin, and Nikos Androulakis with 5%.

In fact, Mr Mitsotakis also moved to first place in the popularity of political leaders, gaining 5 points, which is considered to be due to the handling of the conflict with British Prime Minister Sunak.

However, despite the turmoil caused by the tax bill, the ND managed to dominate with the good course of the economy in mind.

Citizens may see punctuality as the dominant problem, but inflation is slowing, although food remains disproportionately expensive. At the same time, unemployment fell for the first time in years in October to single digits, to 9.6%, reaching a 14-year low.

These poll findings give Mr. Mitsotakis room to unfold his strategy calmly. Yesterday's surprise was the announcement of the postal vote for the European elections, which is considered a "rehearsal" for the national elections and constitutes a major institutional breach.

The institutional section, at the same time, removes from the foreground of the debate the regulation for the civil marriage of same-sex couples, which is causing tremors inside the ND.

In Dubai, the climate

Starting this morning, Kyriakos Mitsotakis will be in Dubai to attend COP 28, the UN's World Climate Summit. Rishi Sunak will be there, among many others, although no contact with the prime minister should be expected.

Mr. Mitsotakis will refer extensively to the good Greek practice of utilising renewable energy sources, mainly solar and wind.

At the same time, there is also a Greek stand in Dubai this year, which the Prime Minister will inaugurate today at noon. Mr Mitsotakis is expected to unfold the overall Greek plan for the energy transition that touches on upgrading buildings, the electrification of transport, strengthening the industry to switch to low-polluting technologies, maritime transportation, our islands, etc.

According to government sources, Mr Mitsotakis will present, together with the US Special Envoy for Climate, John Kerry, the "Our Ocean Conference" - to strengthen the protection of the oceans and the marine environment - which will take place in April in our country.
