Hellenic Institute of Maritime Studies - The Greek educational organisation that conquers London

This is a cross-border collaboration with a historic character, as it is the first time a Greek educational organisation has achieved something like this on British soil.

The University of West London (UWL) and the Business College of Athens (BCA) recently signed a memorandum of cooperation for the creation of the Hellenic Institute of Maritime Studies (HIMS), based in London, the activities of which will begin in the summer of 2024.

HIMS will offer undergraduate and graduate programs in Maritime Business, Finance, Marine Engineering, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Maritime Cyber Security and Law. It will also provide specialised upgrading and specialisation programs for maritime industry executives and, in addition, conduct research and studies.

It is the first Greek-British educational partnership in which our country exports know-how and participates equally in establishing an educational institution abroad in a country whose university institutions are recognised as leading.

The signing of the agreement was attended on behalf of UWL by the President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Peter John CBE, the Head and Senior Vice-Chancellor, Professor Anthony Woodman and the Vice-Chancellor (Business Development), Dr Suresh Gamlath. BCA College was represented by the President, Vassilis Daskalakis; the Managing Director, Haris Daskalakis; the Dean, Dr. Spyros Kostakis; and the Director of Maritime Studies, Apostolos Poulovasilis.

For his part, the managing director of BCA College, Haris Daskalakis, stated that "the first-ever academic collaboration between a British and a Greek educational institution in the United Kingdom proves the very high level of studies of BCA and rewards its many years of dedication to education vanguard. In addition to innovative studies, HIMS will conduct research on topics that impact today and will define tomorrow's developments in the global shipping industry, such as alternative fuels, zero carbon emissions, digital maritime management, "autonomous ships", and maritime and shipping policies".

To add: "We believe in the dynamism of Greek maritime education and its ability to lead on a global level in the years to come."

The present development comes as a culmination of the efforts of BCA College, which has completed more than 50 years of excellence in the field of maritime studies, providing Bachelors and Masters programs in collaboration with UWL in the most critical areas, with particular demand from the labour market: Business Studies, Finance, Hotel and Tourism Studies, Maritime Studies, Psychology and Pedagogical Studies.

BCA combines the quality of British university education, extroversion, and perspectives on life in Greece. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate studies with British degrees, sponsored by the University of West London, the same ones awarded to students studying in London.

Now, it has also conquered the centre of world shipping, London!

Watch the President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of West London, Professor Peter John CBE, the CEO of BCA College, Haris Daskalakis and the Director of Maritime Studies, Apostolos Poulovasilis, discuss the new institute.
