The ABC Channel has responded positively to concerns raised by the Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM) regarding the terminology used to refer to the ancient sculptures commonly known as the “Parthenon Marbles.” In a letter dated 13th December 2023, the ABC News Management expressed its commitment to adopting the term “Parthenon Marbles” in its future reporting.

The GCM, a longstanding advocate for cultural accuracy and rightful representation, has applauded the ABC’s dedication to using the preferred terminology. The GCM’s recent correspondence addressed the importance of language in discussions surrounding these historically significant artefacts.

In the letter, ABC Channel explained that the shift in terminology reflects a broader trend, citing the increasing use of “Parthenon Marbles” to describe the sculptures, with the option to use “Elgin marbles” if historical context is necessary. This decision aligns with a growing consensus to default to the name “Parthenon Marbles.”

The GCM appreciates the ABC Channel’s comprehensive response, which delves into the editorial decisions and considerations behind the use of terminology in reporting on the marbles. The organisation stresses the importance of a well-informed and comprehensive examination of the historical and cultural context surrounding the Parthenon Marbles.

Mr. Bill Papastergiadis, OAM, GCM President, emphasised the significance of fostering an inclusive conversation surrounding the Parthenon Marbles. He stated, “We recognise the importance of fostering a well-informed and inclusive conversation surrounding the ‘Parthenon Marbles.’ We believe that engaging in open dialogue is essential to building bridges and fostering a greater understanding of such matters. Hopefully, the momentum for the return to Greece for the Parthenon Marbles can be continued.”

Ms. Anthea Sidiropoulos, GCM Vice President, acknowledged ABC Channel’s response, appreciating the network’s receptiveness to the concerns raised by the Greek community.

Bill Papastergiadis: “We recognise the importance of fostering a well-informed and inclusive conversation surrounding the ‘Parthenon Marbles.’

The Parthenon Marbles are a collection of classical Greek marble sculptures that originally adorned the Parthenon temple in Athens. Over the years, these artefacts have been a subject of international debate and calls for repatriation, particularly those currently held in the British Museum.

The Greek Community of Melbourne, founded in 1897, plays a vital role in representing the vibrant Greek community in Victoria. The organisation is involved in educational programs, cultural events such as the Antipodes Festival, and advocacy on a range of issues.
