Tragic Shipwreck off Coast of Libya: Over 60 Migrants Feared Dead

More than 60 migrants are believed to have drowned in a shipwreck off the coast of Libya, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The UN agency cited survivors who stated that the vessel had left Zuwara with around 86 people onboard. However, the boat was hit by high waves, causing it to capsize.

As a result, 61 migrants, including children, are missing and presumed dead. Libya is a common departure point for migrants attempting to reach Europe by crossing the Mediterranean. The IOM has estimated that this year alone, over 2,200 people have drowned while undertaking this dangerous journey, making it one of the most perilous migration routes globally. The majority of the victims in this incident were from Nigeria, Gambia, and other African countries. The IOM has confirmed that 25 survivors have been transferred to a Libyan detention center, where they are receiving medical support. In response to the devastating death toll this year, an IOM spokesperson expressed disappointment in inadequate efforts to save lives at sea. In another tragic incident in June, a fishing boat sank off southern Greece, resulting in the deaths of at least 78 individuals and the rescue of about 100 others.
