Stefanos Tsitsipas: The Greek Australian Connection and Unforgettable Fan Support

Stefanos Tsitsipas holds immense popularity in Australia, acknowledging the profound impact of the enthusiastic crowd support on him. The Australian leg of the tennis season stands out as his favorite period, proving to be the most fruitful for him on the court. This is attributed to two key factors.

Firstly, Tsitsipas enjoys widespread support from the sizable Greek community in Australia, a devoted fanbase that consistently rallies behind him in impressive numbers throughout his matches.

Additionally, Tsitsipas affectionately refers to the Australian Open as his "ome Slam" due to the climate in Melbourne, which closely resembles that of southwestern Attica, his hometown. This connection to the weather contributes to his sense of familiarity and comfort during the tournament.

Tsitsipas has notably achieved some of his best results Down Under, reaching the finals of the 2023 Australian Open, marking his second Grand Slam final. Unfortunately, his quest for a breakthrough Slam title was thwarted by the tournament's most decorated champion, Novak Djokovic.

Before his standout performance in Melbourne, Tsitsipas delivered an exceptional performance at the inaugural United Cup, representing his country with distinction. During the semifinal clash against Italy in Sydney, he described the support from the Greek fans as "probably the best" he has experienced in a tennis tournament.

"Every single Aussie swing that there has been so far, I've had a lot of fun playing those, traveling around Australia and just seeing Greeks show up in courts everywhere feels amazing to get that. This year in Sydney I've had probably the best Greek support that I have ever had in a tournament competition in my life."

"I've had an amazing atmosphere being built up during my match with Italy and it left me with some memorable, intense memories that live rent-free inside my head. I have enjoyed every single minute of it on court."

Tsitsipas has a great track record at the Melbourne Slam. Since his breakthrough run to the semis in 2019 which included a stunning win over then defending champion Roger Federer, he has reached the second week every single year since.
