American aircraft carrier “USS Gerald Ford” is in Souda again, locals prepare to protest

The US aircraft carrier “USS Gerald Ford” sailed into the port of Souda on Tuesday morning. The aircraft carrier approached pier K14 of the NATO Base with the help of tugboats. The ship, 337 metres long and approximately 100,000 tons, has a crew of 6,000 people, which will gradually be able to visit Chania.

The USS Gerald Ford, the first of its class, carries two nuclear reactors, an electromagnetic aircraft launch system and several other innovations.

Its speed reaches 30 knots, and it can carry over—75 aircraft of various types.

The ship was in Souda on December 2, 2023.

Regarding the presence of the American ship in Chania, the Sectoral Organisation of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), stated, “the presence of the aircraft carrier in the area is undesirable”, repeating its position of “closing the foreign bases on the island.”

At the same time, on Thursday, December 28, at 6:30 pm in the square of the Municipal Market, the Chania Peace Committee will hold a protest.
