Suspect of Athens bank heist was arrested in Colombia

A 47-year-old Colombian man, allegedly part of a three-member gang that stole valuables from five safe deposit boxes in a bank in southern Athens, was arrested in Colombia on January 10, Athens security police said on Saturday.

The theft in the Nea Smyrni neighbourhood occurred on July 8, 2022 and three suspects - Colombians aged 47, 43, and 47 - were identified on March 31, 2023 by the Security Directorate of Attica.

A case file was drawn for each for creation of and membership in a criminal ring and for specific thefts.

Hellenic Police had also issued European arrest warrants for the group members, and Red Notices through Interpol.

On April 11, 2023 the other 47-year-old was arrested by authorities of Sweden, based on the European warrant of arrest.
