Another Greek Woman Killed in Brutal Femicide - Husband Faces Murder Charges

Greece reels from another horrific femicide, the second since the start of the year. A 45-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries after being set on fire by her husband in Zefyri, western Athens, on January 8th.

The attack unfolded in front of the couple's son and their minor grandchildren, leaving the 20-year-old son with minor injuries as he tried to intervene. Despite intensive medical treatment, the woman died in the hospital on January 16th.

According to police reports, the 51-year-old husband poured flammable liquid on his wife and ignited it following an argument. He has been arrested and will face upgraded charges of murder with intent after the victim's death.

This gruesome act has sparked outrage and reignited calls for stricter law enforcement and better protection for women in Greece. Crimes against women, including wives, partners, and even mothers, have seen a worrying rise in recent years. Human rights groups are demanding the official recognition of "femicide" in the criminal code to better tackle this growing epidemic.

The tragedy leaves behind a devastated family and underscores the urgent need for stronger measures to combat gender-based violence in Greece.
