Sakkari loses in R2 to World No. 74 Avanesyan and continues her dismal run at Grand Slam tournaments

Russian Elina Avanesyan beat Greek Maria Sakkari, the No 8 seed, 6-4, 6-4 to reach the third round of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park.

Avanesyan, ranked No 74, will play Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk next.

The 21-year-old Russian won against Chinese Zhuoxuan Bai (4-6, 7-5, 6-2) in the previous round.

In the previous round, Sakkari, ranked No 8, defeated Japanese Nao Hibino (6-4, 6-1).

She hasn't reached the R4 of a slam since the Australian Open 2022
