Police in Melbourne are offering a $1 million reward for information on the author of a mysterious letter that could help solve the murder of Penny Galanopoulos.

Penny, 33, was found dead after a fire at her home in January 2012. Forensic testing confirmed that she was murdered before the fire was set. In the same year, a handwritten letter containing information about the fire and Penny's murder was received by detectives at Mordialloc Police Station.

Despite believing the letter to be credible, the author never came forward despite repeated appeals from the police. Detective Inspector Dean Thomas highlighted that the investigation is still active and urged anyone with information to come forward.

The reward will be at the discretion of Chief Commissioner Shane Patton, and individuals providing information may be granted indemnity from prosecution.
