28 embassies publish joint statement on same-sex marriage: "We celebrate this historic moment with Greece"

The communiqué is signed by countries from Europe, North and South America, Oceania and Africa, which have already legislated similar provisions

The embassies of 28 countries from Europe, North and South America, Oceania and Africa, which have already legislated similar provisions, welcome Greece joining the "club" of more than 37 states that have granted recognition and equal rights for families with same-sex parents.

"We celebrate this historic moment together with the people, parliament and government of Greece," emphasise the embassies of 28 countries, almost all developed economies and members of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which include the United States, France, Germany and the United Kingdom.

"We would like to welcome the adoption of marriage equality legislation and the recognition of same-sex families. Extending the fundamental right to marriage to same-sex couples has been an important milestone in the journey towards equality and dignity for all in all our countries. We celebrate this historic moment together with the people, parliament and government of Greece," the statement said.

In addition to the embassies of the US and the three largest European economies, the text is also signed by the delegations of Canada, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Switzerland, Finland, Austria, Portugal, Ireland, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, Estonia, Malta, Luxembourg, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Colombia and Uruguay.
