Thessaloniki Woman Arrested for Possessing Ancient Artifacts and Religious Icons

Thessaloniki, Greece - A 70-year-old woman in Thessaloniki, Greece, was arrested on Saturday, February 18th, 2024, after authorities uncovered a trove of ancient artifacts and religious icons at her workplace and home. The investigation, led by the police's Department of Cultural Heritage and Antiquities, resulted in the seizure of 52 pieces of pottery, some dating back to the 4th century BC, and 24 religious icons and artifacts from the Byzantine period (before 1453).

Among the confiscated items were pottery fragments, figurines, and vessels, many showcasing exquisite craftsmanship and historical significance. Religious icons found included depictions of saints and biblical scenes, potentially belonging to churches or private collections.

Authorities remain tight-lipped about the specifics of the case, with investigations ongoing to determine the origin and legality of the artifacts. The woman's motive for possessing these historical treasures is also unclear. However, this discovery has raised concerns about illegal excavations, looting of archaeological sites, and the black market trade in cultural artifacts.

Experts in archaeology and cultural heritage have emphasized the importance of these artifacts in understanding the region's rich history and religious traditions. They urge citizens to report any suspicious activity related to historical objects and cooperate with authorities to protect Greece's cultural heritage.
