US Air Force airman Aaron Bushnell has succumbed to his injuries after setting himself on fire outside the Israeli Embassy in Washington, DC on Sunday.
A video obtained by CNN shows Bushnell expressing his opposition to the conflict in Gaza and claiming to be "no longer complicit in genocide." He then sets himself on fire and shouts "Free Palestine" repeatedly before collapsing.
Authorities, including local police, the US Secret Service, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, are investigating the incident.
Bushnell was confirmed to be an active-duty member of the US Air Force, serving as a cyber defense operations specialist with the 531st Intelligence Support Squadron.
Colonel Celina Noyes, commander of the 70th Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Wing where Bushnell served, expressed condolences to the family and requested privacy during this difficult time.
The incident occurred amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Both sides have reported casualties, with the Israeli government claiming that Palestinian attacks killed over 1,200 people in Israel, while the Palestinian health ministry claims the Israeli military has killed nearly 30,000 people in Gaza.
In December 2023, an individual self-immolated outside the Israeli Consulate in Atlanta, also believed to be a protest against the conflict.
