Arriving to attend the Permanent Holy Synod, which begins today, when asked by journalists about the Church's position on same-sex marriage, Archbishop Ieronymos referred to the decisions of the Holy Synod.
However, he added with a smile: "You are all young... Get baptized. I don't wish you such marriages."
The Permanent Holy Synod of the Church of Greece is meeting from today until Thursday, March 7, to discuss a number of issues, including the Church's response to the recent legalisation of same-sex marriage in Greece.
It is recalled that a few days ago, when asked by journalists what the Church thinks after the vote on the bill for the marriage of same-sex couples, the Archbishop stressed that "it is an issue, on which we will take a position at the Permanent Holy Synod which will meet next week and we will decide together."
The Archbishop's comments come as no surprise, as the Church has consistently opposed same-sex marriage.
In a statement issued last month, the Church said that same-sex marriage is "contrary to the natural order" and "undermines the institution of the family."
