40 forest 'commandos' to join Chios firefighting forces

Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Vasilis Kikilias held a broad meeting at the Chios fire department on Tuesday during his visit to the island.

Kikilias referred to a new unit of approximately 40 forest 'commandos' - elite firefighters specialising in forest fires - who will join the Chios fire department to assist in fighting wildfires.

"It is very important for the island that a Special Forest Operations Units (EMODE) commando team will be added to the island of Chios," Kikilias said, noting that the 40 specialists will greatly assist in efforts to fight forest fires.

Additionally, Kikilias referred to preventative actions for the fire season, noting that prevention and firefighting "are very important."
