The Hellenic Society of Reproductive Medicine has announced a unique case in Greece, highlighting an innovative approach in the field. A woman who underwent cancer treatment was able to conceive after receiving a transplant of her own cryopreserved ovarian tissue.

The woman was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma 16 years ago and underwent chemotherapy and radiation therapy, which unfortunately compromised her fertility. However, in 2013, before starting further treatment for her relapsed lymphoma, she opted for cryopreservation of her ovarian tissue to safeguard her future fertility.

Following her successful recovery from cancer in 2021, the patient underwent a transplant of her cryopreserved ovarian cortex to restore her fertility. This procedure, performed by specialists at the Genesis Clinic of Athens in collaboration with a team from Oslo University Hospital, proved successful. Today, the patient, Mrs. Eirini Kokka, is in her 6th month of pregnancy, marking a significant milestone in the field of reproductive medicine in Greece.

This case is expected to be a major topic of discussion at the upcoming 4th Panhellenic Congress of Reproductive Medicine, focusing on innovative approaches in the field. The congress aims to bring together experts to discuss advancements and clinical protocols surrounding such procedures.

The live-streamed surgery from the Genesis Clinic to various public hospitals across Greece further emphasizes the potential of this approach in aiding other individuals struggling with similar challenges.
