Italy is taking steps to bolster the security of its warships deployed in the Red Sea, according to Italian newspaper 'Corriere della Sera'. This move comes in response to a perceived increase in attacks by Yemen's Houthi rebels on merchant vessels.
The report suggests these attacks are targeting escort warships, which utilize anti-missile and anti-drone defenses to safeguard commercial ships. Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto highlighted this shift, stating, "We have moved on from attacks against merchant ships, to those against escort warships." He further emphasized the growing threat posed by the Houthis, noting the "increasing danger and intensity" of their operations.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani reaffirmed Italy's commitment to the region. He stressed the role of the Italian Navy in safeguarding freedom of navigation and protecting crucial maritime connections between the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean. Additionally, he emphasized the Navy's resolve to deter any threats to Italian waterways.
