The Greek-owned fleet is among the newest and most modern

The average age of Greek-owned ships increased slightly in 2024 compared to the previous year, but it is still 4.5 years below the average age of the global fleet.

According to data from the Greek Shipping Co-operation Committee in London, the average age of the Greek-controlled fleet in terms of ships is now 13.7 years, compared to 18.2 years for the global fleet. In terms of gross tonnage and Deadweight tonnage (dwt), it is 12.1 and 12 years, respectively, compared to 13.1 and 12.8 years for the global fleet.

The average age of the existing fleet registered under the Greek flag increased slightly in terms of the number of ships and now stands at 15.5, compared to 15 in 2023. A small increase has also been noted in terms of gross tonnage and dwt, with values ​​of 10.3 and 9.9, respectively, as against 10 and 9.7 in 2023.

Overall, the Greek-owned fleet amounts to 6.7% of the world fleet in terms of number of ships, 12.9% in terms of gross tonnage and 15.1% in terms of dwt.

The Greek-owned fleet's percentage of the world fleet in terms of the number of ships, gross tonnage, and dwt is 0.8%, 1.9%, and 2.2%, respectively.

However, the rates for oil tankers are 5.5%, 5.9%, and 6%, respectively.
