Stefanos Kasselakis, the president of SYRIZA-PS, has demanded the immediate resignation of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis following revelations of a significant scandal in relation to the Tempe railway tragedy.
In an article published in the "Journal of Editors," Kasselakis asserts that Mitsotakis should step down and call for elections to restore democratic integrity in Greece.
Kasselakis argues that the current political impasse necessitates Mitsotakis' resignation, emphasising that in any democratic European country, a prime minister embroiled in such a scandal would promptly step down. He highlights the urgency of the situation, insisting that Greece must return to normalcy despite Mitsotakis' reluctance.
"Greece will return to normality, whether Kyriakos Mitsotakis wants it or not," Kasselakis noted.
Citing examples of past prime ministers who resigned for lesser reasons, Kasselakis underscores the severity of the situation, particularly regarding the government's alleged cover-up of the tragic incident resulting in the loss of 57 lives. He stresses the need for a dignified exit for Mitsotakis, given the gravity of the revelations.
Additionally, Kasselakis calls for elections, including European elections, under the supervision of international observers. He raises concerns about the government's actions, including tampering with crime scenes, manipulating evidence, and unauthorised surveillance, questioning Greece's standing as an advanced democracy.
Despite acknowledging the potential limitations of an impeachment motion against the government, Kasselakis explains SYRIZA-PS's support for it, emphasising the party's commitment to democratic unity and principles. He criticises other politicians who rejected cooperation during the election campaign, opting to keep Mitsotakis in power, and reaffirms SYRIZA-PS's stance on supporting motions of no-confidence to uphold democratic values.
