It will be Erdogan's first visit to Washington during the Biden presidency
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to be in the US at the beginning of May, according to Turkish media.
Erdogan is expected to meet with US President Joe Biden on May 9 during his visit to the US.
It will be Erdogan's first visit to Washington under Joe Biden's presidency after years of tension in US-Turkish relations. The visit follows the agreement that Ankara achieved to secure F-16s in exchange for approving Sweden's inclusion in NATO.
Earlier this month, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced plans to visit Ankara in May.
"I think there is sincere willingness from the Turkish leadership's side as well for us to be able to bridge our differences, to avoid tensions at least," Mitsotakis said in a televised interview with Greece's Skai TV on March 12.
Washington in January approved the sale of F-16 fighter jets to Turkey following the Turkish parliament ratifying Sweden’s NATO membership. The $23 billion agreement to sell the warplanes to Turkey was accompanied with an $8.6 billion sale of advanced F-35 fighter jets to Greece.
The sale to Turkey includes 40 Lockheed Martin F-16s and equipment to modernise 79 of its existing F-16 fleet. Greece will get 40 F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighters and related equipment.
