Mother Acquitted in Kolonos Child Rape Case

In a highly charged atmosphere this morning, the Athens Mixed Jury Court delivered its verdict in the case involving the sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl from Kolonos. The courtroom was filled with emotion as the fate of the defendants was revealed.

Contrary to the prosecution's recommendations, the court unanimously acquitted the  victim's mother on charges related to child pornography and, by a slim majority, cleared her of accusations of pimping. Overwhelmed with relief, the mother burst into tears upon hearing the decision, while supporters outside the Court of Appeal erupted into cheers and applause.

Ilias Michos, however, was found guilty of rape, alongside other charges including the abuse of a minor, possession and distribution of child pornography, and unlawful possession of weapons and ammunition, leaving him facing a possible life sentence. Notably, Michos was acquitted of trafficking the minor.

Another key figure in the case, identified as "Michael," was convicted of aggravated pimping and child pornography but cleared of attempted sexual activity with the minor.

Moreover, a group of 16 defendants, labelled as "clients," were found guilty of engaging in sexual acts for money, while one individual faced charges related to child pornography. Nevertheless, six defendants were acquitted of sexual assault charges.

In the aftermath of the verdict, Apostolos Lytras, the mother's legal representative, emphasised the vindication of his client's innocence, stating, "It has been proven that the 12-year-old girl was telling the truth." Lytras expressed satisfaction with the court's decision, underscoring the long and arduous battle to clear the mother's name.

The trial continues behind closed doors as defence lawyers advocate for mitigating circumstances for the convicted defendants. Despite the mixed outcomes, the verdict represents a step towards justice for the victim and her family in this harrowing case of sexual abuse.
