Maria Sakkari has made a significant jump in the WTA rankings, moving up two spots from No. 9 to No. 7. After briefly dropping out of the Top 10 in February for the first time in over two years, Sakkari quickly reclaimed her position, spending only one week outside it. Her recent success includes reaching the final in Indian Wells and advancing to the quarterfinals in Miami.
According to Greek media, the world No 9 partnered with David Witt, a former coach of Venus Williams.
Prior to Pegula’s decision to sever ties with Witt earlier this year, the two had collaborated since 2019.
He managed the American to her two WTA 1000 tournament wins, helped her advance to six Slam quarter-finals, and achieved a career-high of No. 3 in the rankings during their time together.
Sakkari appoints Witt off the back of ending her own long-term partnership with coach Tom Hill.
