The eagerly anticipated Athens-Epidaurus Festival has unveiled its dynamic lineup for the upcoming summer season, featuring a robust programme of 93 productions boasting the participation of 2,500 performers.
Spanning 85 days, the 2024 festival kicks off on June 1st with the National Opera's presentation of 'Tosca' at the Herodeion, and closes out the season on August 24th with Euripides' 'Icetides' at the Art Theatre in Epidaurus.
"This year's performances carry a distinct political orientation, focusing on the challenges of contemporary coexistence within societies—emphasising democracy, justice, inclusion, and communal participation," stated festival organisers.
The programme, weaving through venues such as Piraeus 260, the Herodeion, and the ancient theaters of Epidaurus, promises a diverse array of theatrical and dance productions.
International luminaries in theatre and dance, including Christophe Varlikovsky, Guy Cassiers, and Suzanne Kennedy, among others, are set to grace the Greek stages with both new and renowned performances. Notable highlights include Simon Stone's rendition of 'Medea', celebrated classical repertoire featuring Emanuel Ax and Yo-Yo Ma, and an impressive lineup of orchestral ensembles.
In addition to theatrical and musical performances, the festival continues its commitment to promoting Greek artistic expression on the global stage through initiatives like Grape, Greek Agora of Performance. This platform, established last year, aims to provide Greek artists with a systematic avenue for international exposure. Noteworthy Greek talents such as Anestis Azas and Katerina Andreou will be showcased alongside international counterparts.
As the festival looks ahead to its 70th anniversary in 2025, it pledges to expand collaborations with historical institutions and diverse venues throughout the city. From the Keratsini Fish Market to the Pallas Theatre, from the FHW's arena to the historical halls of the Old Parliament, the festival endeavours to bring cultural vibrancy to every corner of Athens.
With its politically charged and culturally enriching programme, the Athens-Epidaurus Festival 2024 promises to captivate audiences and foster dialogue on pressing societal issues.
