Gus Poyet still in mix for Ireland job despite plans to continue talks with Greece

Gus Poyet remains interested in managing Ireland, even though further talks about his future with Greece are planned.

The Uruguayan is now officially out of contract, and a post on his Instagram page, which thanked everyone in Greece for their efforts, included the line “Who knows what the future will hold”.

​Greek media reported that he had turned down the Irish job. They said a Greek FA meeting today would decide their next step.

However, it has since been established that Poyet remains interested in becoming the next Irish boss.

There are conflicting stories on the reasons why talks with the FAI have not progressed.

Sources close to the 56-year-old say the main issue surrounded the backroom team he wanted to bring with him. Reports elsewhere suggest that unidentified figures within the FAI would challenge this version of events.

However, the Irish Independent understands that, as of today, Poyet remained open to the idea of replacing Stephen Kenny – although his posts clearly leave the door open to staying put with Greece tackling the idea that he is the mystery man the FAI were speaking about last month when director of football Marc Canham suggested an agreement of sorts was in place.
