Gym Goers' Dirty Secret

A survey has uncovered the disturbing fact many gym-goers neglect to wash their workout clothes after each use, often reusing them up to several times before cleaning, with smell being the deciding factor rather than concerns about hygiene.

After a sweaty workout, all that dirty gym attire goes straight in the laundry basket, right? Well, apparently not for everyone. A new survey has revealed some rather unhygienic habits among exercise enthusiasts, particularly when it comes to reusing sweaty workout clothes.

The survey, commissioned by Live Football Tickets, questioned 2,000 people about their post-workout hygiene practices. Shockingly, it found that only 53 percent of respondents wash their gym clothes after each visit to the gym.

The findings show that nearly half of the participants (47%) are guilty of wearing the same sweaty clothes for multiple workouts before washing them. Specifically, one in five respondents confessed to wearing the same gym clothes 2 or 3 times before finally tossing them in the wash. Even more concerning, one in nine individuals (11%) admitted to wearing their workout attire 4 to 6 times before cleaning them, while a staggering 6% confessed to wearing the same clothes for 7 or more workouts in a row.

The survey also highlighted a gender disparity in this practice, with men slightly more likely than women to reuse sweaty gym clothes without washing them. About a quarter of men (24%) admitted to wearing the same clothes 2 to 3 times before washing, compared to 16% of women. Similarly, 12% of men reported wearing the same sweaty clothes for up to 6 workouts, whereas only 9% of women confessed to doing so.

But when do people finally decide to wash their workout clothes? Surprisingly, more than half (55%) stated that smell was the deciding factor, while only 46% expressed concerns about germs and bacteria.

The survey also uncovered similar unhealthy habits regarding gym towels, with one in three people (36%) admitting to not washing their towels after each use, and 12% washing them only once a week.

But just how harmful is it to reuse sweaty workout clothes? A separate report suggests that the gym may be one of the germiest places, with gym equipment harbouring more germs than many toilet seats. Researchers found that 70% of these germs could be harmful to human health.

To put it into perspective, researchers compared the bacteria levels on gym equipment to those found on everyday items. They found that the average exercise bike harbours 39 times more bacteria than a cafeteria tray, while free weights carry 362 times more germs than a toilet seat. Treadmills were found to have 74 times more bacteria than a typical public bathroom faucet.

Experts recommend some tips for better hygiene practices after exercise:

1. Hang sweaty clothing to dry between uses to limit bacterial growth.

2. Wash underwear and socks after each use to prevent the spread of germs and fungal infections.

3. Wash gym towels and workout clothes separately to avoid cross-contamination.

4. Wash clothes inside out to clean them more thoroughly.

5. Use a detergent formulated to tackle tough sweat marks and odours.

6. Regularly disinfect the washing machine to prevent bacterial transfer.

While the thought of wearing sweaty clothes repeatedly may seem harmless, it's essential to consider the potential health risks – not just for yourself but to be considerate to others around you - and to adopt better hygiene practices for a cleaner and healthier workout routine for all.
