Mother of Kolonos Child Rape Victim Faces Retrial

The acquittal of the mother of a 13-year-old girl in Kolonos, who was accused of aggravated pimping involving her child, is being contested as senior prosecutors have pushed for a second-degree review of the case.

The Athens Appeals Prosecutor's Office has filed an appeal with the Court of Appeal, seeking to overturn the initial verdict which saw the woman narrowly acquitted with the vote of only four jurors. Prosecutors argue that the evidence in the case file was not adequately evaluated by the jury, despite judges and prosecutors being convinced of her guilt from the outset.

While the acquittal of the minor victim's mother on pornography charges remains unchallenged, no appeals have been lodged against the convictions of others involved in the child rapist ring.

The 38-year-old woman, who had been imprisoned throughout the lengthy trial, was released last week after being convicted of racketeering and sentenced to 20 months behind bars. Having already served 18 months as a remand prisoner, she walked free following the trial's conclusion.

In sentencing, the main defendant, Ilias Michos, received life imprisonment with an additional 27 years, 20 of which are suspended, while another defendant known as "Michael" was sentenced to 18 years in prison. Several other defendants received sentences ranging from 13 months to seven years for various offenses related to sexual acts with a minor or child pornography. However, they were released on probation pending further proceedings in the case's second instance.
