The man who carried out a deadly stabbing rampage at a Westfield shopping centre in Bondi Junction in Sydney's east yesterday afternoon has been identified as a 40-year-old Joel Cauchi from Queensland.
Other victims included 38-year-old woman Ash Good, the mother of a nine-month-old baby girl who was also wounded in the attack.
Couchi moved from Brisbane to Sydney a month ago and was reportedly homeless.
There is no indication that the attack was motivated by politics or religion at this point, which casts tremendous doubt on earlier speculation that the man was either Jewish or Muslim.
Police: "There is still, to this point … no information we have received, no evidence we have recovered, no intelligence that we have gathered that would suggest that this was driven by any particular motivation - ideology or otherwise"
"We are continuing to work through the profiling of the offender but very clearly to us at this stage it would appear that this is related to the mental health of the individual involved
