The individual responsible for a fatal stabbing spree at a Westfield shopping center in Bondi Junction, Sydney's east, yesterday afternoon has been identified as 40-year-old Joel Cauchi from Queensland.
Among the victims was 38-year-old Ash Good, a woman and mother to a nine-month-old baby girl who was also injured in the incident.
Cauchi, who had recently relocated from Brisbane to Sydney and was reportedly homeless, perpetrated the attack.
There is currently no evidence suggesting political or religious motives behind the assault, refuting earlier speculation regarding the attacker's possible Jewish or Muslim affiliation.
According to the police, "There is still, up to this point, no information, evidence, or intelligence indicating any specific motivation, whether ideological or otherwise."
"We are still analysing the offender's profile, but it seems apparent at this stage that mental health issues played a significant role," they added.
