Athens commuters will face significant disruptions on Wednesday, 17th April, as Metro and Trolley services grind to a halt due to a 24-hour transport strike called by the General Confederation of Workers of Greece (GSEE).
The decision to participate in the strike stems from workers' demands for direct hiring and employment contracts, rallying against what they perceive as a "wave of austerity and shameful profits" that detrimentally impact the livelihoods of low-wage earners and pensioners, according to a statement by the Metro Workers’ Union of Athens (SELMA). Members are urged to assemble at Klafthmonos Square at 11 a.m. to voice their grievances.
Joining the cause, the labour union of the Athens Urban Transport Organisation (OASA) has also pledged support for the GSEE strike, announcing work stoppages on Wednesday.
While public transport buses in Athens will continue limited operations from 09:00 to 21:00, demands for public urban transport enhancements, collective labour contracts, and increased staffing underscore the union's objectives amidst the strike action.
