According to FedHATTA, as cited by Travel, holiday bookings at Greek travel agencies have increased strongly by around 20% compared to the corresponding Easter period last year. Generally, the prices are set at last year's and, in some cases, even lower.
As far as domestic destinations are concerned, the islands of the North Aegean lead with increased bookings, with Chios, Leros, and Mytilene in first place. The Cyclades and the Dodecanese, particularly Tinos, Syros, Paros, Naxos, Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes, Patmos, Kos, and Leros, follow. The Sporades and Crete are in the third and fourth spots, respectively.
Nonetheless, the Ionian Islands are once again the star of Greek travellers' preferences due to their unique Easter traditions, and there is a great demand for them, especially for Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakynthos, Lefkada, and Paxos.
Pelion, Zagorochoria, and Ioannina attract travellers who prefer the mountains, while Halkidiki attracts those wanting to be by the sea.
The Peloponnese attracts many visitors, especially Monemvasia, Stoupa, Kardamyli, Kalamata, Xylokastro, and Nafplion.
In addition, Greek travellers will head to all the seaside areas with hotels that opened after the Catholic Easter.
Travel preferences abroad
Greeks who prefer to travel abroad mainly prefer European destinations, especially Italy, Spain, Portugal and France. At the same time, closer destinations such as coastal Turkey and Istanbul also have large numbers due to Easter activities by the Constantinople Patriarchate.
Far away, exotic destinations such as Southeast Asia, Egypt, Dubai, Morocco, and Latin America follow in preferences.
The president of the Federation, Mr Lysandros Tsilidis, said in this regard: "The prices for all tourist packages, both domestic and foreign, have been set by the tourist offices in such a way as to serve the entire range of travellers, making possible for everyone an Easter getaway but also with responsibility as provided for by the European Directive on organised travel."
He added, "Tourist offices have designed short, long, multi-day, two-day, and three-day trips to appeal to all consumers," Tsilidis added.
