Greek Military Ship Thwarts Houthi Drone Attack in Red Sea

In an interception operation today, a Greek military vessel deployed in the Red Sea as part of the European Union's naval mission successfully thwarted an attempted drone attack by Yemen's Houthi militants targeting a commercial ship.

Officials at the Greek Defence Ministry confirmed the incident, underscoring the ongoing efforts to maintain maritime security in the volatile region.

According to reports from the Greek Defence Ministry, the interception occurred when the Greek frigate Hydra, while escorting a merchant ship in the Gulf of Aden, detected and engaged two drones launched by the Houthi militants.

A spokesperson stated to Reuters, "On Thursday morning Greek frigate Hydra, while it was escorting a merchant ship in the Gulf of Aden, fired at two drones." The official further elaborated, stating, "It destroyed one while the second moved away," highlighting the effectiveness of the defensive measures employed by the Greek military.

The incident was later corroborated by another defence official. Greece's contribution to the EU's naval mission, known as Aspides, has been significant, with the deployment of a frigate aimed at safeguarding the crucial maritime trade route. The mission, launched in February, is designed to protect against potential drone and missile attacks orchestrated by the Iran-backed Houthi militia.

The Houthi militants have frequently targeted commercial ships in the Red Sea, citing retaliation for various regional conflicts, including Israel's military operations in Gaza. Their actions pose a significant threat to maritime security and have necessitated international efforts to counteract their aggression.
