Surging Voter Registrations for Postal Ballots Nearing Deadline

The registration rate for postal voting has witnessed a steady surge as the deadline approaches on Monday, 29 April.

In the past week, daily registrations have surpassed 10,000, a significant increase from the 3,000-4,000 registrations recorded previously. As a result, the Ministry of the Interior's support office has extended its operating hours to 24/7.

As of Saturday, 27 April, over 157,000 Greek citizens have registered for postal voting in the upcoming European elections. Notably, around 41,100 of these registrations are from expatriates residing in 115 countries, a substantial increase compared to the 23,000 expatriates registered to vote in person during the 2023 general election.

European countries account for the majority of expatriate registrations (84.1%), with Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, Belgium, and the Netherlands being the top origin countries. Additionally, expatriates in countries that did not have polling stations in last year's elections will now be eligible to vote by mail.

All age groups have expressed significant interest in this new voting method, with the 17-30 and 31-40 age groups comprising 31.8% of registered voters. Registrations from citizens aged 41-50 and 51-60 account for 38.2%, while those over 61 make up 30.1%.

Registrations can be made through the application epistoliki.ypes.gov.gr, accessible via gov.gr and the websites of the Interior Ministry and Foreign Ministry.
