Athens International Airport Sees Record Passenger Surge

In the first quarter of the year, Athens International Airport (IAA) "Eleftherios Venizelos" experienced a significant surge, largely driven by the British, German, and American markets.

This marked the first time the country's largest airport surpassed 2 million passengers in March alone. The British and German markets secured the top two positions among European markets, landing at "Eleftherios Venizelos" during the first three months of the year.

Leading the pack were the British, with a notable 15% increase in passenger traffic from the UK compared to the previous year. Germany followed closely with an impressive 71% surge, while the US consistently maintained its position as the largest non-European market for "Eleftherios Venizelos", boasting a 19% increase in passenger numbers in the first quarter, according to official data. The Cypriot market also showed strength, with a 33% rise.

Italy completed the top five markets, contributing the largest number of scheduled seats on international flights to Athens, witnessing a 14% increase compared to the corresponding period in 2023. The Dutch market notably boosted AIA numbers with a 68% increase, while France followed with a respectable 16% rise in passenger traffic.

The Israeli market, although in eighth place, experienced a slight decrease of around 8% compared to the previous year. Conversely, the Polish market displayed significant growth, climbing four places to secure the ninth spot with a 33% increase. Spain rounded out the top ten with a modest 3% increase.

Outside the top ten, the Turkish market showed remarkable growth, securing the 11th position with a substantial 70% increase. Lagging markets included Switzerland, down 11%, Belgium, with a marginal decrease of 1%; Denmark, down 18%; Romania, down 47%; and Serbia experiencing a 24% decrease compared to 2023.
