Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasised the significance of the upcoming European elections during his monthly meeting with President Katerina Sakellaropoulou, stressing the need for robust participation to address pressing geopolitical challenges facing the continent.
With Europe facing complex issues such as defence policy, border security, and economic competitiveness, Mitsotakis underscored the importance of Greek engagement in European forums to assert the country's interests effectively.
Expressing concern over growing political polarisation, Mitsotakis urged for constructive dialogue focused on European issues, urging parties to avoid toxicity and division. However, he acknowledged the challenge of achieving this amid heightened tensions.
Turning to international affairs, Mitsotakis addressed his forthcoming visit to Ankara, expressing strong dissatisfaction with the conversion of the historic Byzantine church, the Chora Monastery, into a mosque. He condemned the action as unnecessary and disrespectful to Istanbul's rich cultural heritage, emphasising his intention to raise the issue with President Erdogan during their meeting.
Despite acknowledging the persistent differences with Turkey, Mitsotakis highlighted the importance of maintaining open communication channels and engaging in honest dialogue to address disagreements without escalating tensions.
