Australians and Greeks to Remember Shared Sacrifice at 83rd Anniversary of Battle of Crete and Greek Campaign (ANZAC, Greece, WWII, Commemoration)

On Saturday, May 18th, a wreath-laying ceremony will be held at the Cenotaph in Martin Place Sydney Australia at 1:45 pm to commemorate the 83rd anniversary of the Battle of Crete and the Greek Campaign.

This year's service holds particular significance as it marks the second and last Anzac Campaign after Gallipoli. The ceremony honors not only Australians but also their valiant Greek allies who fought side-by-side during World War II.

Established by Anzac's and Greek migrants over 50 years ago, the service continues a legacy of shared sacrifice and mutual support. It remembers those who gave their lives for one another, ensuring their enduring bond is never forgotten.

The ceremony offers an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made that secured the freedoms Australians enjoy today.

An estimated 500 people are expected to attend, including dignitaries, military personnel, religious leaders, community representatives, consulate officials, Anzac families, schools, and members of Greek-Australian organizations. This diverse attendance reflects the widespread nature of the Anzac defense across Greece.

Adding to the significance of the event, the Greek government will be sending a high-ranking delegation to commemorate the anniversary. The delegation will be led by Vice Admiral Christos Sasiakos, the newly appointed Deputy Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff.

The ceremony will see representatives from approximately 80 organizations lay wreaths at the Cenotaph, paying their respects to the fallen heroes.
