As the Cannes Film Festival (May 14-25, 2024) unfolds, the Thessaloniki Film Festival, backed by the Ministry of Culture, takes center stage with a dynamic showcase of Greek talent and cinema.
Underlining its commitment to supporting the Greek film community, the Thessaloniki Film Festival ventures into Cannes with new collaborations, top-tier actions, and an array of programs. With a focus on promoting Greek cinema and empowering producers and filmmakers from Greece, the festival's presence at Cannes aims to elevate the country's cinematic prowess on the global stage.
A highlight of the festival's Cannes endeavours is its participation in Cannes Docs, a prestigious platform within the Marché du Film, the world's largest film market. Thessaloniki Film Festival spotlights four Greek producers at Cannes Docs, amplifying their projects and fostering international partnerships.
Since 2018, the festival has spearheaded similar initiatives at Cannes, championing Greek cinema and facilitating its international exposure. This year's lineup comprises producers whose projects debuted at the Agora Docs in Progress of the 26th Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival.
Scheduled for May 19th, a special event will showcase the works of these producers to a diverse audience of industry professionals, poised to explore co-productions, international sales, and festival premieres. Greece stands among the select few delegations invited to Cannes Docs, alongside Spain and Canada, underscoring the nation's burgeoning presence in the global film landscape.
Supported by the Recovery and Resilience Fund, within the framework of the initiative "SUB 6.3 - Market extroversion of the Thessaloniki Film and Documentary Festival," the participation in Cannes Docs underscores Greece's commitment to fostering cinematic innovation and collaboration.
Among the distinguished participants at Cannes Docs are Rea Apostolides from Anemon Productions, Konstantinos Vassilaros from StudioBauhaus, Dafni Kalafati from Filmiki Productions, and Leonidas Liambeys from Longrun Productions. These trailblazing producers represent the diverse talent and creative vision driving Greek cinema forward on the international stage.
