ELSTAT Reports April Inflation at 3.1%, Highlighting Shifts in Energy and Food Prices

The Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) released its latest data on Tuesday, revealing that inflation in April stood at 3.1%, marking a slight decrease from March's 3.2% and a notable increase from the 3% recorded in April of the previous year.

Among the significant changes in Greek pricing, the cost of natural gas experienced a considerable drop of 26.9%, providing some relief in energy expenses for consumers.

However, the report also pointed out notable price hikes in the food sector, where prices surged by 5.4% overall. Particularly striking was the spike in the price of olive oil, which skyrocketed by 63.7%.

Further analysis of the data highlights specific food items that experienced significant increases. Rice saw an 8.5% price hike, while the general category of meat rose by 3.2%. Fresh fish prices surged by 10.6%, while fruits and vegetables also experienced substantial increases at 11.6% and 6.1%, respectively. The prices of sugar, chocolates, sweets, and ice creams collectively rose by 3.4%, while other food items increased by 3.3%. Additionally, the prices of mineral water, soft drinks, and fruit juices collectively rose by 12.5%, and alcoholic drinks not served rose by 5.8%.
