Charges Dismissed in Deadly Migrant Shipwreck Case

Greek City Times Breaking

A Greek judge has dismissed charges against nine Egyptian men accused of causing a shipwreck that killed hundreds of migrants last year. The incident sent shockwaves through the European Union's border protection and asylum operations. The prosecutor argued that Greece lacked jurisdiction in the case, leading the judge to drop the charges.

The fishing trawler, which was traveling from Libya to Italy, is believed to have carried over 500 people, most of whom perished in the sinking. After the incident, 104 people were rescued, primarily migrants from Syria, Pakistan, and Egypt, and 82 bodies were recovered.
