Factory Involved in School Children Food Poisoning Incident Burns Down

The factory that was involved in the food poisoning of dozens of school children last week was completely burned down after a fire broke out at 9:30 on Sunday evening.

The Giannitsis company's factory in the industrial area of Lamia, central Greece, was completely destroyed by the fire that broke out at 9:30 in the evening on Sunday.

The cause of the fire has not been clarified so far.

According to the state-run news agency AMNA, firefighters rushed to the scene within a few minutes. However, the flames had engulfed most of the factory as firefighters were trying to contain the blaze. Within 45 minutes, the roof of the factory collapsed, and thick black smoke and flames could be seen from the Lamia – Thessaloniki highway.

The firefighters tried with anti-suffocation masks to enter the factory, wanting to rule out the possibility of workers being inside. Still, strong explosions from gas tanks fueled the flames.

Some of the workers who first arrived at the factory site entered the forecourt to remove cars, mainly company trucks, but most of them were in flames.

While firefighters were trying all night, the blaze has not been completely contained, as reported by the local website tvstar.gr on Monday morning.

140-150 people worked in the factory supplying lunches to public schools and other organizations. Local media lamiareport.gr noted this information.

This particular company and factory have been involved in the food poisoning of dozens of elementary school students last Thursday.

Angry parents have reportedly already filed over 30 lawsuits against the company for the food poisoning of 63 school children in 7 elementary schools in Lamia, central Greece.

Authorities' investigation into the food poisoning was supposed to begin on Monday.

An investigation into the causes of the fire should also start at some point.
