Repatriation of Acquitted Egyptians in Greek Shipwreck Case

Egyptian citizens unjustly accused in the June 2023 Greek shipwreck case have been cleared of all charges by the Kalamata court. The Ministry of Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs is diligently coordinating their release and repatriation.

Minister of Emigration Soha Gendy emphasized the unwavering commitment to ensure the well-being and safety of Egyptians abroad. The ministry is working closely with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Egyptian ambassador in Athens to facilitate the expeditious return of the acquitted individuals.

The shipwreck, which involved approximately 700 individuals from multiple nationalities, saw 42 Egyptians survive. It underscores both the risks of illegal migration and the strengthening bond between Egypt and Greece.

Minister Gendy highlighted a recent meeting with Dimitrios Kairidis, Greek Minister of Migration and Asylum, during his visit to Egypt. Cooperation in combating illegal migration and promoting safe and legal pathways for migration was discussed.

A significant outcome of the bilateral talks was the extension of employment duration for Egyptian seasonal workers in Greece from nine months to 21 months, with potential for further future extensions. This reflects a deepening partnership between the two nations in addressing migration challenges and fostering economic opportunities.
