Bishop Emilianos of Meloa Resigns from Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia

Bishop Emilianos of Meloa, Vicar General of the Archdiocesan District of Brisbane, officially resigned from the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia (GOAA) on Monday, June 3.

His resignation was tendered during a meeting of Bishops from across Australia held in Sydney, presided over by Archbishop Makarios of Australia.

The resignation follows a period of tension between Bishop Emilianos and the GOAA, which began in March 2023. Initially, he submitted a resignation letter to Archbishop Makarios on March 10, 2023, citing four primary reasons for his decision and implying there were additional concerns.

Bishop Emilianos criticised Archbishop Makarios for providing selective information to the Bishops on critical matters, including an instance where the Bishops were asked to endorse a letter to the Ecumenical Patriarch without prior knowledge of its contents. He also pointed out that the new amendments to the GOAA Constitution, which the Bishops were asked to support, should have been discussed with them beforehand due to their potential impact.

Furthermore, Bishop Emilianos highlighted several policies and actions by Archbishop Makarios that he found problematic. These included a policy restricting Bishops from operating Facebook pages and the reassignment of clergy members who opposed the Archbishop’s instructions. He mentioned the transfer of Bishop Kyriakos of Sozopolis from Sydney to Melbourne and the financial uncertainty faced by Bishop Bartholomew of Charioupolis, who incurred unreimbursed travel expenses.

Despite expressing his concerns, Bishop Emilianos did not receive support from other Bishops, as none co-signed his resignation letter. After initially apologising to Archbishop Makarios and continuing his ministry, Bishop Emilianos travelled to America in November 2023, where he met with Archbishop Elpidophoros of America. Upon his return to Brisbane in early 2024, he was replaced as Vicar General by Bishop Bartholomew.

Archbishop Makarios accepted Bishop Emilianos' resignation on June 3, expressing gratitude for his contributions to the GOAA and conveying his best wishes for the future. The resignation has saddened Australia's Greek Orthodox community, where Bishop Emilianos held various roles, including Chancellor at the Cathedral of the Annunciation of Our Lady in Redfern and Chairman of the GO Youth, GO Family and Friends, and GO Teens initiatives in New South Wales.
