A soccer match commemorating the 20th anniversary of Greece's European Championship triumph will take place in Essen, the hometown of their championship-winning coach, Otto Rehhagel. The match will feature the 2004 Greek national team facing off against a UEFA All-Star team.
On Friday, Otto Rehhagel, former players Angelos Basinas and Zisis Vryzas, UEFA representative Jürgen Eisman, and representatives from the city of Essen held a press conference at the Essen stadium.
Despite the ceremonial nature of the match, Rehhagel jokingly pledged not to let his former players take it easy. "During that time, the EURO semi-finals will be taking place, which unfortunately my players will not be able to watch because they will have to train hard to be ready for the big game," he quipped. "I am very happy that 20 years after 2004, my 'children' will be in my 'home' so we can all celebrate this success together."
Both Basinas and Vryzas expressed their excitement to celebrate the anniversary in their former coach's hometown.
Eisman announced that the UEFA All-Star team roster will be revealed in the coming days. The match is scheduled for July 11th.
