PM Mitsotakis Acknowledges Missing Election Target

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis admitted yesterday that the ruling Conservative party fell short of its goal in the recent European elections, attributing the outcome to record abstention and protest votes.

“I will not hide the truth. Our party did not reach the goal we had set. Nor am I interested in arguments such as that the difference with the second party is the biggest in the history of the European elections," Mitsotakis stated in a recorded message on Sunday night. He noted that the electorate might have approached this election differently, knowing it wasn't for electing a government.

Mitsotakis acknowledged voter dissatisfaction, particularly concerning inflation. "I hear their voice and their demand and I hear it loud. ‘We trust you, but try harder.’ And that’s what we’re going to do,” he added.

Despite the setback, Mitsotakis emphasised that New Democracy remains the dominant party in Greece, successfully avoiding the surge in far-right parties seen elsewhere in Europe. He pledged to focus on everyday issues affecting Greeks and declared, “These elections are the starting point of a new path towards 2027.”
