President of the Hellenic Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, attended the commemorative events on Monday in the municipality of Distomo-Arachova-Antikyra for the 80th anniversary of the Distomo massacre by Nazi occupation troops. After the memorial service and the laying of a wreath at the mausoleum for the victims, Sakellaropoulou stated that “the massacre of Distomo deeply wounds our collective memory.

The only honour and justification for the dead victims of this Nazi atrocity is the constant vigilance and resistance against every attempt to revive fascist and Nazi formations in our country and in Europe. The protection of democracy, the defence of freedom, and our persistence in the struggle for German reparations for this crime can never be written off.” Later, Sakellaropoulou visited Osios Loukas Monastery.
